Ash Lodge is a family-run care home in Smethwick, West Midlands, dedicated to providing exceptional nursing and residential care. With over 25 years of experience, our team delivers person-centred support, expert clinical care, and a welcoming home-from-home environment for every resident and their loved ones.

We’d like to give you peace of mind over the care of your loved ones when they move into Ash Lodge, so this blog is about how we work to achieve accreditation through the Gold Standards Framework. What follows is what that framework means to us, your loved ones and to you.
What is the Gold Standards Framework?

“The Gold Standards Framework (GSF) is the UK’s leading training provider for generalist frontline staff in caring for people in the last years of life. Our aim is to enable a ‘gold standard’ of care for everyone, with any condition, in any setting, given by any care provider, at any time in a person’s last years of life. We want to ensure people live well before they die and die well in the place and manner of their choosing. Our vision is to ensure that every person caring for those in their final years of life is trained and accredited to GSF standards to deliver gold standard care.” GSF

Training for care home staff

Working towards the Quality Hallmark Award accreditation with GSF involves taking part in specific programmes that train our staff in providing effective end of life care, enabling residents to live well. To do this we improve collaboration between external providers such as GPs and out of hours care, aiming to be more proactive in preventing unplanned stays in hospital and death in hospital rather than in a setting of their choice.

The GSF Quality Hallmark Award is recommended by the Care Quality Commission and co-badged with Care England among other nationally recognised bodies.

Training includes:

  • Dignity in care – Living well for the rest of your life
  • Identifying needs
  • Supportive care and proactive planning
  • Assessing clinical needs – Dementia, pain and distress
  • Advance care planning
  • Communication – Residents, families and bereavement support
  • Cross boundary care – Collaboration with GP and hospital teams
  • Planning care to reduce hospital admission
  • Care in the final days
  • Spiritual care – Spirituality and cultural differences in families, residents and staff
  • Sustainability of high standards of care.

When it comes to living in Ash Lodge, all this training means your loved ones will have a life affirming experience, free from pain and distress with all their needs met by a team of loving professionals in a setting that feels like home.
