Job Title: Care Assistant

Job Overview: 

As a Care Assistant, you have to provide emotional and physical support for vulnerable and frail residents. The duties include washing and dressing residents, monitoring their health, and taking care of them.

Main aims of the job:

  • To be part of the team, whose aims are to ensure that residents’ nursing, personal and psychological needs are met on a daily basis.
  • To help promote as much personal and physical independence and choice as possible in the activities of daily living undertaken by the residents within the Home.
  • To help maintain a stimulating and attractive environment for the residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To assist in the direct care provision of all aspects of the residents’ assessed needs, which may include.
  • To assist residents in washing, dressing, and undressing.
  • To participate in the basic delivery of care of the residents under the supervision of trained staff, e.g., bed bathing, pressure area, mouth care, and eye care.
  • To assist the residents with their toileting needs, including continence promotion.
  • Assist in the safe lifting, transferring, repositioning, and movement of residents.
  • Helping residents maintain their dignity by styling their hair or doing their makeup.
  • Encourage residents to participate in social and recreational activities.
  • To change beds, tidy residents’ rooms and do light cleaning.
  • To empty aids, where appropriate.
  • To assist with problems with mobility, including those of mobility aids, where appropriate.
  • To help serve meals and drinks, feeding those residents who are unable to feed themselves and ensuring that each resident receives the meal or diet that he/she has requested and is suitable for his/her needs.
  • To help with the admission and discharge of residents, including the listing of resident’s property/clothing.
  • To convey relevant information about the residents to the Senior in Charge, the individual plan of care may be regularly updated, and appropriate care given, paying particular attention to any changes observed in the resident’s physical or psychological condition.
  • Assist in weighing residents.
  • Report immediately to the Senior in Charge any accident or untoward incident that may occur to a resident or a staff member.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding residents’ particulars.
  • Assist in activities within the Home.
  • To help maintain a safe environment for staff, residents, and visitors, through awareness of health and safety policies and attending training as required.
  • To attend appropriate training programmes/courses as available, further existing knowledge.
  • Answer the telephone, take clear messages, and contact the Senior in Charge immediately.
  • To undertake any other duties as required to keep the Home running smoothly, as delegated by Home Manager.

General:

  • To attend and participate in staff meetings and attend all mandatory training when required.
  • To attend supervision and appraisals, ensuring that you have prepared for these when required.
  • To attend any other training when a need has been identified.
  • To assist with domestic duties in the home, including cooking, cleaning, and laundry when the need arises.
  • To communicate effectively with other staff, relatives, and visitors, including professional agencies regarding residents.
  • To be fully aware of the fire policy and the awareness of food hygiene regulations.
  • To be familiar with all current policies and procedures and understand your duty to comply and implement them when necessary.
  • To wear the uniform provided at all times.
  • To ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
  • To keep all records of domestic work completed after each shift in the appropriate book.
  • To promote and ensure the good reputation of the Home at all times.

Qualifications, Training and Experience:

  • To have a genuine interest in the care of vulnerable and older people.
  • To be willing to participate in National Vocational Training Programmes.
  • To have good communication skills.
  • Good writing skills.
